When you’re ready for a day of kayaking, you want the smoothest entry into the water. These beginner tips can help to make launching your kayak a breeze.
1. Choose Your Launch Point:
Ensure the water is deep enough for your kayak. Check the depth with a paddle or your feet if necessary. Choose a stable, gradual slope for easy access. Avoid rocky, slippery, or steep banks. Be aware of any potential hazards like submerged rocks, logs, or debris.
2. Prepare your kayak
Load it properly: Distribute weight evenly, heavier items in the center and lighter items in the bow and stern. Keep your center of gravity low.
Secure gear: Use bungee cords, straps, or dry bags to secure your gear tightly.
Install your seat: Some kayaks require a separate seat. Make sure it's installed securely.
Check for leaks: If you have an inflatable kayak, check for leaks before launching.
3. Entering the water:
Use the 'hip-snap' method: Sit on the edge of your kayak with your feet flat on the ground. Lean forward and use your hips to propel yourself into the kayak.
4. Launching the Kayak:
Find a gradual slope: If launching from a dock or a sandy beach, make sure the slope is gentle.
Start slowly: Push off with your feet and paddle gently to gain momentum.
Maintain balance: Keep your body centered and avoid sudden movements.
Use your paddle for stability: If you wobble, use your paddle to brace yourself against the water.
